The next-to-the-last full month in 2021 begins today. An accomplishment of note in what has been, for a sizeable majority of us, a year truly like no other. We began the year under quarantine against coronavirus COVID-19 – in effect since March, 2020 – and we now face a very uncertain future as the coronavirus mutations remain threatening to us all.
It has been a little more than a century since the Influenza Epidemic of 1918 – the “Spanish flu” – cast a fatal toll around the world. Times have changed in many ways but the conflict of humanity versus virus remains in favor of the infectious contagion!
As 2021 recedes slowly into 2022, we can all hope for a far better year. A better and healthier year for us all! We may be served best by diligently retaining some basic safety protocols as a vital part of our essential routine. Two suggestions immediately come to my mind: frequent and thorough handwashing and appropriate cordial distancing. The payment queues (lines) at the local food market have never been this stress free!

One additional – unrelated – thought to share here. A fellow professor at my university presented to me a small news article that a former student of ours had postal mailed to him with a note that he please share it with me. Unfortunately, there was no identifying the source of this newsprint publication aside from the fact that the former student resides in Mississippi.
My co-worker mounted the news item onto a pastel colored, letter size sheet of paper, laminated it and gave it to me. I’ve now thumb-tacked it to the bulletin board inside my room where I deliver the majority of my lectures.
The subject of the news publication is obviously extremely fundamentalist and ultra-conservative and right-wing in nature. It summarily relates all nudists and nudity as the equivalents of perverted criminals who seek to indoctrinate young people into the sinful and degenerate homosexual (an older and offensive reference to the GLBTQ+ community) lifestyle!
This fanatic diatribe concluded that all nudists were “perverted” exhibitionists who wanted to build up recruitment into the satanic homosexual lifestyle.
Fortunately, this type of conspiracy isn’t anything new or surprising. This is, after all, the good old USA!

That poor student. For whatever reason he didn’t know most nudists are straight. Further, he didn’t know that there’s such a thing as ‘Christian’nudists. Oh dear, his whole screed needs a complete reworking…..
