Reflections: End of May, 2018

Sometimes, even just thinking about how it feels to be bare is almost as good as actually being clothes-free. I’m referring to those times in our lives when being nude just simply isn’t a viable option – such as work. Even though I am open about being a naturist/nudist (bare practitioner) with most of my co-workers, I still don’t have the option of coming onto campus in just my birthday suit (skin). My university and the District of Columbia don’t extend to me that freedom.

USA: Memorial Day

Today, Monday, May 28, is the Memorial Day holiday in the USA. It is observed on the last Monday in the month of May, annually. This is the day designated by the U. S. legislature to honor those who gave the ultimate sacrifice – their lives – in the service of their country. This custom originated in 1868 as Decoration Day, as people decorated the graves of those who died in the U. S. Civil War with miniature flags and flowers. As the deceased were often buried hundreds of miles from their homes and families, local residents visited the cemeteries on behalf of families unable to do so.

Unofficially Summer!

Today is the first full day of the Memorial Day holiday here in the USA. It is the traditionally considered as the unofficial beginning of the 2018 Summer season. The long-awaited and much anticipated time of sand, sun and surf! The return of those carefree days of expanded sunlight and endless fun. If you’re planning to be outside today, please remember to cover yourself with sunscreen. No one wants to miss a solitary moment of unlimited activities because of a painful sunburn, or worse. Please see previous post as well as the provided link.

Protect Yourself!

This weekend is the Memorial Day weekend here in the USA. Monday is a national holiday which makes this the first 3-day weekend of the 2018 Summer season. Summer doesn’t officially begin until June 21 but most meteorologists recognize this long weekend as the the unofficial beginning of the season of sand, sun and surf. The sunlight is at its zenith and so are the opportunities for sunburn – the skin discomfort as evidenced on the back of the gentleman in the above picture.

Skinny-Dipping Season!

At last, Spring-like temperatures have finally arrived and now our thoughts turn to those amazing trips to the beach. It doesn’t really matter where the beach is located, by the ocean, the sea, the lake or a river. What’s important in our minds is that wherever it is, the sunshine, warm temperatures and the water will be there as will the number of men who are parading their bare bodies as we all rejoice in the ability to skinny-dip (swim naked) outdoors again among our nude brethren!

Hospitality

When invited to be guests in the home of friends, it is important to respect their wishes and in turn, expect them to respect us. This is a matter of common courtesy and treating others as we, ourselves, would like to be treated. In the above photo, the “welcome” mat in front of the door sends a clear and irrefutable message. We are about to enter into the home of a bare practitioner (naturist/nudist). The sandals are politely placed beside the greeting. The message is plain and simple.

The Bare Prince

Most of us can recall the 2012 incident where Prince Harry was surreptitiously caught unawares and totally bare (naked, nude) in a hotel room in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA. The entire affair saturated the media for almost a week and earned the ginger royal and naked highness a stern, private rebuke from his grandmother, H. M. Queen Elizabeth II. It seems that nudity was not considered appropriate behavior for a person of his rank and stature as a scion of the Windsor Dynasty. However, no one lost their head in the matter and his grandmother is still queen.

Mother’s Day Weekend

This upcoming Sunday, May 13, is Mother’s Day in the USA. It is a date, always the second Sunday in May, that is set aside for celebrating and honoring mothers and the job that they do. In this country, the date was designated through a proclamation issued by then-president Woodrow Wilson in 1914. It has been the same date ever since, the second Sunday in May. The occasion is not limited to just the USA. The date may be different but almost every country has a day for honoring mothers and motherhood.

Classroom Time!

Last week, as an afterthought, I was sent to the my state’s conference on HIV/AIDS which is held annually throughout the state. It has been a number of years since I’ve attended one and I was anxious to see what, if any, personnel changes had occurred since the last time I was present at one. The convocation was sponsored by the state-wide health department and featured a number of guest presenters from across the southeastern region of the USA.
