World Naked Gardening Day

Tomorrow, Saturday, May 6, 2017, is the 13th observance of World Naked Gardening Day. It was first celebrated on Saturday, September 10, 2005. It’s a time where all are encouraged to get outside, tidy our lawns and gardens and, of course, to do it while we’re all completely clothes-free! The purpose of World Naked Gardening Day is to promote the health benefits of nudity and to foster the harmony between nakedness and nature. On the event’s website, gardening nude is listed as the second favorite activity – behind swimming – that people like to do while naked.

“Sweet, sane, still Nakedness in Nature! – ah if poor, sick, prurient humanity in cities might really know you more! Is not nakedness then indecent? No, not inherently. It is your thought, your sophistication, your fear, your respectability that is indecent. There come moods when these clothes of ours are not only too irksome to wear, but are themselves indecent. Perhaps indeed he or she to whom the free exhilarating ecstasy of nakedness in Nature has never been eligible (and how many thousands there are!) has not really known what purity is – nor what faith or art or health really is.” ~ Walt Whitman, Specimen Day

The first two World Naked Gardening Day observances occurred during the month of September. It was then decided to move the date to the month of May to coincide with the beginning of the traditional growing season in the Northern Hemisphere. Only recently has the fixed-date of the first Saturday in May become the standard.

This event is intended to be a fun activity to benefit not only individual health and well-being but one to be shared with family and friends. Nudity is best when it is experienced socially (hence: social nudity) and for a purpose. In encouraging people to congregate without the barrier of clothing, World Naked Gardening Day organizers and sponsors hope the spirit of camaraderie will assist with community building and a collective responsibility for not only our environment but ourselves as well.

It doesn’t matter if you’re mowing, planting, pruning or raking. The important thing to remember is that we’re bare, outside and busy! Feeling creative? Follow the lead of the man in the above image and design a rock garden to showcase your flowers. There is absolutely no limit to the number of projects available, especially when we can perform them naked!

Aaron, my husband, and I live in a large urban area. Our home is in a large condominium neighborhood. This year, as in the past, we’re inviting several other gay naturist/nudist couples over for brunch. Before serving the meal, we all go out onto our unit’s balcony and re-plant some of our indoor flowers/plants that have outgrown their original containers.

Privacy isn’t an issue as we live on the top floor of our building. We also hang bed-sheets over the balcony railing to make sure that we offend no one by our nudity. Yes, the space does get somewhat crowded; but we’re all friends and we’re all naked and we’re all celebrating together.

World Naked Gardening Day

“Seasonal Interchange” by Michael Aitken

In Winter, when the trees are bare, we mortals don our winter wear.

In Spring, when trees begin to dress, we mortals then start wearing less.

Until for some, with Summer’s heat the role reversal is complete

Happy World Naked Gardening Day, 2017!

Naked hugs!

A same gender loving (gay) bare practitioner (nudist) who invites you to explore my blog. At times I may appear irreverent but I am in no way irrelevant!
