The first Monday of the month of September, annually, is the national Labour Day holiday!
The idea of the recognition of “Labour Day” as an official U.S. holiday grew in the late 19th century along with the expansion and growth of the trade union and labour movements. It was first observed as a national holiday in 1894.
In the USA, a holiday caled Labour Day was first proposed for the month of September in the early 1880s. By the time the national observance began, it was a holiday in 30 states.
The initial holiday proposals focused on the manual labour force, primarily on those who physically performed the tasks in the growing field. The early national observances concerned those who were employed in the national workforce. It had little affiliation with private industry.
The recognition and honouring of the entire workforce, both private and public sectors, evolved with the expansion of the industry especially during the involvement of both world wars and afterwards.
During the 1950s and1960s, the attention to the entire workforce, every worker, no matter the type of work engaged in, became the central focal point of the observance.
