May Day, 1 May, annually!

The traditional May Day occurs on the first day of May. However, many observances of this occasion happen on any day of the month, depending on the host/source. In the Northern Hemisphere, May Day is usually celebrated to remind ourselves that the Spring season has definitely arrived and by this time is blooming. A truly awesome time to be natural in nature and the sunlight!

The origins of the May Day festivities vary from cultural, national, regional and religious sources. Throughout the hemisphere, the progress of the Spring season is visible and physical with the rising outdoor temperatures commemorating the end of the barren environs suffered through the winter and the bright and colourful atmosphere that reminds us all that is finally here!

The Roman Catholic Church fostered the dedication of the month of May in honour of the Blessed Virgin Mary. This tradition has many believing the renewal of faith with the natural rebirth of foliage during the arrival of Springtime!

*World Naked Gardening Day, Saturday, 2 May 2026!

Observed throughout most of the world the first Saturday during the month of May, annually. This year, the date is 2 May 2026 and is the twenty-second anniversary for the observance!

The very first observation of World Naked Gardening Day occurred on Saturday, 10 September 2005. The second followed, again on a Saturday, 9 September 2006. After the second event, it was decided to change the celebration to the month of May, annually, as that was determined to be the ideal time for gardening and growth. Canada and New Zealand have both adopted different dates for their events due to climate diversity.

My spouse, Aaron, and I host a brunch for this activity at our condominium in Arlington, Virginia, USA. We enclose privacy on our balcony by hanging sheets and invite friends over (a small gathering) to bring a potted plant that needs to be replanted due to growth. We then proceed with the repotting outside and socializing inside. Of course, we’re all bare practitioners so our clothing does not hinder our performance of our task-of-the-day!

While we’re performing our gardening duties, Aaron is busy in the kitchen preparing a delicious meal to replenish our energy level! His culinary skills surpass our gardening skills combined!

Background:

World Naked Gardening Day was originally designed as a day for the entire world to observe, however, in reality, globally that is impossible to accomplish. Weather and growing seasons vary not only by hemispheres (Northern and Southern) but also from region-to-region. More often than not, the growing season is even different within national boundaries as well. The current practice is to continue the single date observance in order to keep “world” as an honest part of the title and to respect every country’s claim to determine what date is appropriate for their nation.

The goal is to garden while enjoying nakedness – the actual date this is done is probably insignificant. More than likely, gardeners who are dedicated naturists/nudists perform the task more than once while clothes free anyway!

Our header photograph (above) shows us all the gardening promotion of an entire nursery (floral and plants)! This is very special as aside from designated nudist colonies, there is rarely any existing clothes free or clothes optional business or community thriving on our planet!

Sniffing the blooms!

WNGD is a recent addition to the listing of events primarily observed for serious adherents of nakedness. Many bare practitioners participate in this activity but it really isn’t promoted towards the GLBTQ+ culture; part of the homophobic retention from the days of the naturist/nudist past.

The very first WNGD took place on 10 September, 2005. The early festivities attracted media attention, especially in the then-popular television broadcasts and in the printed media publications (newspapers). The second observance of WNBR was held one year later on 9 September, 2006. After the second one, it was decided to change the set date to the spring flowering season corresponding to the Northern Hemisphere; the official date for the occurrence changed to the first Saturday in the month of May, annually. Since 2007, this is the official date.

In 2018, the New Zealand Naturist Foundation adopted the last Saturday in the month of October as a more conducive gardening date for the Southern Hemisphere. Canada is now transitioning to the first Saturday of the month of June, annually, as a more productive date and have the event now entitled as Naturist Canadian Gardening Day (NCGD).

The founders and organizers of WNGD assert and insist that “beside being liberating, nude gardening is second only to swimming as an activity people are most willing to consider doing when nude.” In the United Kingdom, naturists are officially encouraged to engage in clothes free gardening in sanctioned select public parks.

Internal garden!

Our observance:

My spouse, Aaron, and I host a WNGD social at our condominium on the actual date for several of our bare practitioner couples. We involve those who are very similar to us: with basically indoor plants and/or balcony growing flowers. Our space is limited and we’ve had some fun-filled plantings over the past. This year is the second hosting since the coronavirus COVID-19 compelled us to cancel our WNGD for a couple of years.

Aaron prepares a tasty brunch offering and we hang sheets over the railings of our balcony. The neighbors may enjoy a revealing “showing” of our bodies but that doesn’t promise that our guests are willing models! Our goal is to observe gardening day and extend the health of our houseplants, not to offer a anatomical lesson!

This year, Aaron and I are concentrating our attention on our flowering plantings that appear on our balcony – without the coverings! We have portulacas and geraniums that we want to place along the edges of the balcony that receives direct sunlight from morning through the early afternoon. Actually, one of our geraniums from last year survived the winter inside and is due for a change of potting.

World Naked Gardening Day, 2023!

World Naked Gardening Day (WNGD)!

World Naked Gardening Day, Saturday, 6 May, 2023!

World Naked Gardening Day (WNGD) is a fun event celebrated on the first Saturday of May, annually. In 2023, it occurs on tomorrow, 6 May. Gardeners from all over the world get together – at least, in spirit, – to attend to their flowers and plants wearing no clothes or shoes, although hats and sunglasses are permitted!

World Naked Gardening Day (WNGD) is a recent occasion it was first observed in September, 2005, and the same month in 2006. In 2007, the official date was determined to be the first Saturday in May and has remained so since. Due to the differences in the climate globally, some countries hold their own date for the event, such as Canada (June, every year) and New Zealand (October).

Indoor gardening!

Prior to the coronavirus COVID-19 quarantine and restrictions, my spouse, Aaron, and I hosted a World Naked Gardening Day indoor plant re-potting event in our condominium. We invite several other bare practitioner couples to participate and offer them a luncheon. The guests would arrive, we’d all strip out of our clothing and collectively re-pot our indoor plants from one pot into another one, slightly larger. The actual repotting would happen on our small balcony. We’d attach bedsheets to the balcony railing so as not to discomfort neighbors and to allow us our nude freedom.

Aaron and I plan to hang these bedsheets today, the day before WNGD. This enables our curious neighbors to already notice the feature and to become acquainted with it in place. It also helps to insure our privacy from voyeurs! To assure us from any breezes causing a flapping of the sheets, we have extra-large safety pins to keep the sheet layers intact.

The coronavirus quarantine suspended our World Naked Gardening Day (WNGD) festivities for 2020, 2021 and 2022. This year will be our first hosting of our WNGD tradition and we have made certain our guests are as enthusiastic about the resumption of the activity, just as Aaron and I both are! Adhering to recent practices, the number of guests we’ve invited for WNGD, 2023, is considerably reduced. We simply don’t have the space inside our condominium to allow everyone a comfortable distance apart. In addition, we need to be respectful of our neighbors and their concerns.

Aaron and I are careful to make certain that the safety and health of our fellow gardeners is a primary issue. Hopefully, we can eliminate any transmission of any variant, known or unknown, of the infectious coronavirus. We are providing disposable facial masks and hand sanitizer for all guests. We also have disposable gloves available.

My spouse, as our WNGD chef, has always concocted delicious brunch delights for our consumption. In keeping with safety guidelines, this year we’re offering baked goods only and fresh fruit. Aaron is disappointed his culinary abilities aren’t being utilized but he understands the need for caution. A repeat massive mandatory quarantine is not on anyone’s “wish list!”

The routine for the actual gardening aspect this year basically is the same as in previous times. The focus is on repotting an indoor plant for personal use. As urban residents, a pot and a plant is our only option as a naked gardener. Our shared circumstances enable us to grow a body and clothes freedom community!
