NBHAAD: Part I!

Official notification!

Introduction:

National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day (NBHAAD) occurs annually on February 7. This year, 2024, that date happens in the middle of the week on a Wednesday. Using the calendar to our benefit, publishing this post entry two days in advance affords us the chance to provide information of the significance of this occasion for all of us, not just African-Americans. That is the reason for today’s offering entitled:

“The Disproportionate Impact of HIV/AIDS on the Black Community!”

The purpose is to explore specific examples of disparities based on race that produced the multitude of deaths and infections within the African-American population here in the USA. “Disproportionate impact” refers to factors – beyond the control of those affected – that cause harm or injury to those being affected.

“NBHAAD: Part II!” is offered here on Wednesday, February 7, 2024, – the actual date for NBHAAD. It features an overall look at the offerings and provisions of the NBHAAD campaign.

Black SGL couple!

The Disproportionate Impact of HIV/AIDS on the Black Community!

To this day, there are some misinformation and myths surrounding the HIV/AIDS pandemic that remain within the minds of many Americans, even in the days of competition with the coronavirus COVID-19 period. One of the strongest of these untruths is that HIV, the virus that causes AIDS, is an exclusively gay (same gender loving: SGL) disease. No matter of the scientific proof to the contrary, this falsehood remains. A close second place to this misconception is the unsubstantiated notion that Black people are highly susceptible to HIV.

In all honesty, it is the White population in the USA that has caused the alarmingly high rate of death and infection from HIV factors among African Americans. The serious mistrust of the public health services by persons of colour was caused and created by people of European descent (Caucasian/White) through bias, discrimination, hate, ignorance, prejudice and segregation. For generations, Black people suffered under the “Jim Crow” laws and separation. This resulted in numerous incidents and instances where the African Americans were subjected to trials and tribulations as “second class” recipients of poor care and mistreatment from the U.S. Public Health Service, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), the local and state health services.

The most infamous and notorious of this disasters is known simply as the Tuskegee Experiment that was underway under the watch of the federal government from 1932 until 1972. It involved 400 Black men “officially” untreated by medicine in order to document and monitor the deterioration of health after being infected with syphilis. It was conducted in the deep south at the then Tuskegee Institute by doctors working for the federal government. Click the link below to see the study details on wikipedia:

Tuskegee Syphilis Study

Personally, when I first learned of this project, I was shocked that it was permitted to continue after the passage of legislation for equality in the 1960s. I was appalled that social consciousness didn’t end the study and that it was never an issue.

NBHAAD Awareness Ribbon

The results of this maltreatment is the overwhelming reason for the deep and profound distrust of the CDC and the U.S. Public Health Service by the Black population. It was one of the major obstacles that resulted in the delay by the community of colour to the realities of the HIV/AIDS crisis. This, in turn, created the explosion of the new disease within this particular community and culture.

With the issue of distrust of the public health agencies as the primary source of the disproportionate impact of HIV/AIDS in the Black American community and culture, another very important factor was the cultural and racial insensitivity of educational and prevention information distributed among this population specifically and the general population as a whole. Too often, vague and ambiguous language and reasoning was employed when direct and simple language should have been presented and used.

The majority of Black adults were the products of segregated educational facilities – often resulting in limited comprehension of the materials provided to them. This unclear information caused confusion and misinterpretation that strengthened frustration and resentment. Government and politicians were well aware of this disparity and failed to address this problem.

Important reality!

For example, instead of “negotiating” the “effectiveness” of the use of a condom, the direct action approach: “tell him if he’s not wearing one, he’s not getting any!” would have deliberately delivered the message in a clear and concise manner. Minimal room for confusion and hesitation with a response such as that! The meaning is plain no matter the gender of the individual receiving the reply.

Distrust and insensitivity in communication are two of the examples offered for the high rates of HIV/AIDS deaths and infections within the African-American community and culture. Another example of almost equal importance is the prolonged inaction and inertia from the government departments over the staggering statistics. Prompt examination over the reported data clearly indicated a major breakdown and inappropriate flaw in the materials and methods long before a serious problem arose. Had discrimination and segregation not existed prior to the outbreak of HIV, the results could and probably would have been significantly different.

Due to budget constraints and the executive and legislative blindness of the republican politicians, funds for public health concerns and programs were severely hampered while defense spending soared.

This situation initiated a dilemma rarely believable in the supposedly wealthiest country in the world. Repeatedly, funds were scarce and demands on the necessity of compliance skyrocketed. Resources were completely unavailable and politicians refused to even consider any concession to ease the crisis for “those” people – the Blacks and other ethnic and racial minorities, the gays and the drug injectors. Evidently, the republican belief was that society could only benefit from the death of “those” people!

Vital message!

Financial assistance and grants to local public service agencies and not-for-profit organizations working within the Black community on a local basis would have greatly reduced the widespread gap between mistrust and trust that existed. A local establishment would have afforded both at atmosphere of credibility and recognition that would enhance the information and message delivered. This would have alleviated the stigma of HIV/AIDS as being a “homosexual White man’s disease.”

Awareness and pride!

“As committed, dedicated, honest, open and sincere bare practitioners (same gender loving naturists/nudists), all we desire is for the world to see us as we perceive ourselves: all naked, all natural. We have nothing to hide and are without reason for shame. We are proud of our nudity and our same gender love. They are not cause for embarrassment, fear or guilt. That is simply what and who we are in our life.” ~ Roger Poladopoulos-Peterson ~ Deaf Gay Alliance speech Washington, D.C., 4 December 2022

Yet another barrier created by both the republican executive and legislative arms of the federal government that fatally delayed and hindered any productive reaction from the community of colour to the ravages of this pandemic.

Naked hugs!

Return to Regularity!

Hairy armpits before he begins!!

Introduction:

Before anyone here today gets the wrong idea, this post entry does not involve or relate to any sort of bowel elimination. I hope that brief and simple explanation prevents any misunderstanding and/or confusion. Now that the official end of the summertime is now past us, today’s topic addresses the resumption by many of their personal exercise activities.

Special notation: Today’s post entry also includes these images of this man confidently exposing his commendable growth of hirsute axilla (hairy armpits)! For those here who are completely unaware, one of my very favourite aspects of male anatomy!

Active in his fitness routine!

Many of us who live in the Northern Hemisphere know the summer season affords us all too many opportunities for athletic indulgence, organized and/or spontaneous free-play and other varieties of active pleasure that are usually unavailable throughout the remainder of the year. The longer periods of actual daylight also provide the impetus for social and physical expression. The result of these factors give to many an “excuse” (reason) to abbreviate and/or abandon their daily exercise/fitness routine.

Confident of his physique development!

Now that regionally, our summer season is now complete, those who decided to take exception to their established fitness routine are now resuming their activity. For those who procrastinated initiating any type of exercise, another summer of not having a body that reflects development and maintenance, has inspired them to implement a practice to insure no repetition of their obvious embarrassment.

Treadmill exercise!

So, those of us who diligently, faithfully and regularly followed our own fitness routine throughout the entire summer season are now challenged with our own adjustment! Just as we became comfortable with a less stressful crowd at our exercise facility, we are now faced with yet another obstacle. The return of the “regulars” plus all those determined to avoid the repeating of their seasonal discomfort of not being completely fit and toned when another summer appears!

Legwork!

The return to the daily routine doesn’t really cause that much inconvenience. After all, most of the returnees are already familiar with the equipment and have their own scheduling. It’s the arrival of those who have to adapt to the establishment regulations, procedures, etc., and to figure out the best possible way to operate the equipment that present us with our greatest dilemma. Unsure of exactly the most beneficial essentials, they frequently question even the most polite regular for the basic guidelines on how to operate each station. Not only does this distract others from performing their procedure, it also often creates problems with the individual pieces of utilization at each station.

Instances too numerous to mention happen when one or more fitness trainers are at one station instructing “newbies” on how to properly work the exercise equipment. The backlog at the particular area sometimes becomes endless!

Routine!

At times, I wonder why do we even bother with the season of summer? The ends don’t always justify the means! Oh well, time to head out to my local gym!

Naked hugs!

Bare in September!

September bonus #1

Background:

When Aaron was reorganizing his desk a few months ago, he found a portable disk where he had saved some images he wanted to share here on ReNude Pride. He evidently began the disk project but soon transferred his collection to a different device. He labelled these pictures “September bonus.” Since he recovered them, we have spent some time trying to figure what that particular title entailed.

An alternate title that we both agreed on is:

Possible Reasoning For Genital Modesty!

The model is unknown to us both and is evidently very comfortable posing while bare. Definitely not an exhibitionist as he is quite modest in his poses – or, at least, his modesty is in the pictures Aaron saved here. Which possibly is a reason for keeping them.

********************

Whenever I’ve encountered images such as these, I often asked myself: why? What is the benefit of posing clothes free modestly? It rarely, if ever, encourages nakedness. If anything, it represents either guilt, shame or both while trying to appear to others as naked. Particularly, when used as illustrating a publication (blog) such as ReNude Pride (here) or any article advocating or enlightening public (social) nudity.

September bonus #2!

Possibly, as many naturist/nudist critics often equate nudity with exhibitionism, these images captured Aaron’s attention as they were discrete and exposed no gender anatomical features. They absolutely defy the myth that bare practitioners want to shock the rest of the world by exposing themselves in public. This particular model is very certain and proud of his fitness and physique but also respectful of others who may be offended by his display of his genitalia.

Perhaps our model is honestly trying to remain courteous and considerate of all persons? He’s confident of his naturist affiliation while being sensitive to the feelings of those who prefer modesty. An admirable trait but one difficult to balance objectively!

“Bare is a true gauge of equality. The significant discrepancy being some have more body hair than others.” ~ Roger Poladopoulos ~

Photographs such as these of this model also represent a subtle message of shameful to sincere bare practitioners (nude enthusiasts) such as Aaron and myself. What good is body freedom if one is ashamed of showing his free body? Bare yourself but do not expose yourself? Whatever happened to the theme of nude pride?

A confident theme!

Another possible reason for Aaron’s preserving these pictures is to have them in case they’re needed to illustrate a posting where complete nakedness isn’t allowed/tolerated. I was once a member of a nude gay group in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area that published a monthly newsletter. I can’t remember the exact name but it included “fig leaf-less” as part of it. Surprisingly, it didn’t permit any full-frontal nudity of men photographs in the monthly publication. I was astonished at this policy of a group that espoused same gender body and clothes freedom! Needless to add – I never renewed my membership after my first year!

Obviously, I wasn’t the only person confused/disappointed in the group and the absurd policy. It was only in existence for just about three years and then it completely disappeared. Perhaps, they all donned clothing?

September bonus #3!

Perhaps he (the model) is relatively new to the world of naturism/nudity and isn’t yet ready to completely pose at the mercy of the photographer. He obviously isn’t the only bare practitioner who has similar feelings. There are many others who need some time to reach a certain level of comfort with being body and clothes freedom models before they publicly share themselves. Not everyone who embraces a natural appearance is at the same level of pride at every opportunity. Every individual is different.

Then, there are also some who are totally comfortable while clothes free yet remain extremely conscientious about being photographed – regardless of their clothes status. Their anxiety is derived from being the subject of the picture and not their nakedness. They are fine and very “normal” but if someone begins making pictures they become very erratic and nervous. Again, every individual is different.

As the month of September generally starts a new scholastic season, maybe this was the thought that clouded my spouse’s brain. For many of us, September represents a “return of routine” and sometimes this is a time for nude social organizations to conduct membership recruitment activities. Maybe that was the rationale of the “fig leaf-less” club I addressed above: encouraging naked without offering any offense.

These photos may have been made to be used as an “innocent” (non-controversial) tool to invite both the curious and the inquisitive to explore nudity. A method of inspiration that is both appealing and less provocative than an image showing someone’s genitals.

No matter the reason, the model himself represents an interesting subject for today’s post. Best wishes for a delightful weekend to everyone! Take care and stay bare!

Of course, we all recognize the fact that any buttocks exposed are not viewed as provocative or suggestive of any one particular gender. After all, buttocks are just buttocks, right? Aren’t we all equal in this part of our anatomy?

The Shoneye Twins: shy?

Author’s Reminder:

This post entry today is not based on any actual research data or solicitation (polling) tool. It is a summary of concepts/exchanges/and ideas that Aaron and I discussed together regarding the three (3) posed photographs of the same anonymous model featured herein. We have no information on the identity of this individual aside from the fact that he posed discreetly and confidently for these images. As implied above, he is an excellent example of masculine and muscular fitness. In the three pictures, he proudly affords glimpses of both his armpit and pubic hairs and the both of us are grateful that he’s obviously a man who has little, if any, desire to represent anyone other than his natural (unshaved) self.

This publication reflects spontaneous reasoning as to why Aaron stored these pictures for sharing. They are brief comments and insights into our speculation. This article does not represent an accumulation of all the possibilities of the man’s posing, nor do they refer to his participation in this session or series. The purpose of this supplement is to remind us all that reasons for discretion are as numerous and as valid as are the the total of individuals who pose for them. Also, the editor and photographer also have a determining factor as to the final selection.

********************

Remember to have an enjoyable weekend!

Bare Practitioner Model?

Unobstructed view!

During today’s frantic and hectic lifestyle, I’m sometimes asked how do we bare practitioners promote (spread the word about) ourselves? A valid question that does require some form of acknowledgment if not a complete answer. Most of our “promotion” comes by way of face-to-face communication between one who is already a bare practitioner and one who is curious to learn more about what it is to become one. The prerequisite here being the inquiry, how did the person inquiring even know about them?

Familiarity induces curiosity which often leads to questions. Some examples being: How does one become one? What is the difference between gay social nudity and bare practitioner? How much does it cost to become a bare practitioner? The list can and often does become endless.

To my knowledge, there is no book published that offers a step-by-step approach to becoming a bare practitioner. Anyone reading here has an understanding of the concept and those who personally are acquainted with my spouse, our family and friends and few others have some knowledge on the subject and then it all returns to the face-to-face communication stage.

Buttocks and penis!

Which leads to todays post entry here. The guy modelling here probably has no earthly idea of what or who a bare practitioner indeed is. Given the label on the bottom corner of the images that picture him, he’s employed either directly or indirectly for an adult studio that produces same gender loving pornography. Aside from that reality, we really don’t know that much about him.

The exception being the plainly obvious fact that he does seem very content on modelling (demonstrating or showing off) his physical attributes. He has no hesitation nor inhibition in featuring himself and, of course, his body. He’s very comfortable and relaxed in sharing his nakedness to others and allowing them to admire his anatomy. He’s also confident of their approval of himself.

Is he a stereotypical bare practitioner? Are we, as a community, overly-assured of ourselves as examples or models of the lifestyle of living with body acceptance and clothes freedom? Do we represent the naturist/nudist philosophy in such a provocative manner? Is this “what” we’re all about?

Inhibited?

In reality and truth, the best response to the questions offered above is “no!” There exists not a single answer to all of the proposed inquiries. Like every other community or group within our human species, there are some of us who are more bold and brave in our lives just as there are some who are more humble and shy. There are then the rest of us who are compliant with the idea or notion letting each of us determine our own level of comfort in being ourselves, no matter the categories or classifications we individually decide we fall or fit into. We are our “own” judge and jury.

According to our respective background, belief, role-model and upbringing, we are a collection of what we’ve experienced and been taught. Few, if any, of us are absolutely identical. Similar, perhaps but there is no predetermined standard that applies to all of us. There are as many varieties among us as there are number of us.

Boldness and modesty!

And this diversity is a benefit for us all! It is one of the major factors that makes our lives as varied and as different as possible. It keeps us curious and as interested in precisely what and who we all are. It gives us the value of being ourselves in a very chaotic and complex world! It affords us the chance to be unique in our own special way!

Nude Recreation Week, Day 2!

Weightlifting!

2023 NUDE RECREATION WEEK

July 10 – 17, 2023

Fitness exercise!

The are no mandatory regulations that require all of us to adhere to an established routine in observing 2023 Nude Recreation Week. I’m just offering suggestions for different ways that we may attempt in order to have a pleasure and varied experience for each and every day. A set routine is often boring and lackluster.

Personal physical development is one option available. Another is personal mental development that can be exercised by playing certain games or engaging in certain puzzles such as crossword or sudoku or word-search. The choice is entirely your own!

Training routines!
Juggling for eye-hand coordination!

An individual or group can be as creative and imaginative as needed to achieve desired results. There is no specific guideline that guarantees success. The goal is to engage and have fun while doing so. After all, it is: Nude Recreation Week!

International Skinny Dip Day!

Conventional swimmer: clothed!

What is essential for a skinny-dip? Obviously, a body of water: man-made (pool; indoor or outdoor) or natural (lake, ocean or river), it makes no difference. The designation of today, July 8, 2023, as the International Skinny-Dip Day by no means makes this date the only day of the entire year that persons may swim naked. Everyone is allowed to swim swim-suit free any day they desire and anywhere they want – illegally or legally. This communication encourages all of those individuals who’ve never before taken the plunge clothes free to do so today in the company of others who enjoy the activity and the experience – especially those of us who are ardent bare practitioners! Try it, you just might like it!

Bolder and stripped!

Most skinny-dippers (nude swimmers) start off wearing a swim-suit. Once comfortable with that challenge – often with the companionship of those more bold and daring – they feel inclined to strip-off their cumbersome clothing and join in the fun of swimming covered in nothing else besides their own skin and a layer of sunscreen. Body freedom and social nudity make an excellent reason to lose this archaic inhibition and false sense of modesty!

Bare and proud!

We’re all born naked. Why not shed the vestiges of deceit and disguise and swim bare without a care in the world? What is there to suffer? Guilt? Shame? Those puritanical “learned behaviours” are hardly worthy of a second thought. Remember, every single one of us had to be taught how to put on clothes. Enjoy it! We’re skinny-dippers, not fashion models!

Bottoms-up without clothing!

Uncertain of your aquatic ability or skills? Relax and have fun! Keep to your level of comfort and proceed accordingly. There’s always someone around who is a better swimmer or who doesn’t swim at all. Be yourself and forget trying to impress others. We’re all in our own skin and we’re all free of designer labels! Those reality facts alone afford us enough reason to joyously skinny-dip all summer long!

********************

Safety Suggestions:

Sunscreen application!

Sunscreen:

My spouse, Aaron and I have one essential household policy: if it occurs outside in either direct or indirect sunlight. always sunscreen! Apply it regularly and wear it with pride! All over all the time! When we’re out in public, we intentionally cover one another and then rub it in! He does me then I do him – or vice-versa! There is no shame in visually reminding others to do the same! Hopefully, if it appears erotic and bromantic, others will do likewise!

Security notice!

Safety in numbers:

It is always best not to swim alone. The water presents too much of a challenge to risk yourself! Especially in natural water that isn’t completely transparent. None of us are guaranteed of what we may or may not encounter there. The only time swimming alone is allowed is inside a man-made indoor or outdoor pool where visibility is total (however, even that isn’t encouraged).

Celebrate and enjoy!

Body and clothes freedom!

A ReNude Pride photo-essay to celebrate being a true bare practitioner!

More than a decade ago, while first publishing my original A Guy Without Boxers here, I combined gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and queer (GLBTQ+) pride celebrations with naked and/or nude (clothes free) pride. After my original site was closed closed (without notice or warning or any type of communication from wordpress.com) I was somewhat hesitant about following this tradition when I began ReNude Pride. After thought and consideration, and the love and support of my spouse, Aaron, ReNude Pride has continued in the footsteps of honouring not only our GLBTQ+ heritage but also our bare practitioner (same gender loving naturist/nudist) culture. We are, after all, proud to be both!

Advocacy!
Pride!

Come join us in GLBTQ+ Bare Pride! Join with me in nudity!

Obedience?

We celebrate ourselves: bare and bold!

Unity in our shared nudity!

We stand together, without any sense of guilt or shame. We’re just being what we basically all are: naturally ourselves. Just as we were created to be, all living together in mutual respect and harmony!

Our time of the year!

For the overwhelming majority of us bare practitioners, with the warmer weather, we hardly need a reminder to be proud of ourselves and our nakedness. The passing of another winter has guaranteed our joy in another month of GLBTQ+ pride and the approaching season of Summer, 2023! Add to that the opportunity to celebrate the ability to throw off our clothes and enjoy ourselves and one another as we engage in the triumph of being our natural selves, without any embarrassment or humiliation!

Our nudity alone is enough for us to welcome this exciting time of the year!

Strip out of your garments and be you!

Our philosophy of body freedom and clothes freedom compliment one another. Our freedom entails us to enjoy living naturally while respecting those who are uncomfortable with their own personal nudity. We all know that all lives are not identical and that all values vary from person to person. What is good for one may not necessarily be good for another!

Clothe freedom evolution!

Some people are more accepting of clothes freedom, especially when in the bare environment where there is almost no judgment expected. Others, even when surrounded by body and clothes freedom enthusiasts, still retain the discomfort of exposing themselves around others. We respect the rights of all persons to live within their personal “comfort level.”

A joyful destination!
Bare friends!

Some persons express disdain for appearing bare (naked/nude/clothes free) in public. One of their principle reasons for discomfort is the obvious lack of clothing. However, they often are left behind when they understand that in the company of others, the ones who are wearing garments are often the objects of notice by others who surround them without any clothing whatsoever!

Tyson Kobe: skinny-dipping pool exit!

Introduction:

Allow me to explain the title. I am in no way encouraging anyone to actually put on any article of clothing! That is simply not in my nature as a dedicated bare practitioner. What I am referring to by the title here is to remind us all – myself included – of the vital importance of the use of sunscreen whenever we go outdoors. No matter the length of time in either the direct or indirect sunlight; sunscreen is essential in the preservation of a healthy and protective skin covering!

While we’re reviewing the topic, another piece of information that is often overlooked. Sunscreen is equally important in the wintertime as it is during the summer! The UV rays from the sun are definitely not a seasonal spectacle. Unlike our nakedness, the UV rays do not hibernate!

During the colder seasons of the year, no matter which hemisphere one resides, the sun’s rays are reflected and intensified by the snow and ice. The use of sunscreen remains necessary on all exposed areas of the skin. Failure to do so may cause severe consequences.

Beach visitation!

In the Northern Hemisphere, the 2023 Summer season does not officially begin until June 21, annually. This also happens to be the absolute longest day of sunlight within this particular hemisphere. Due to the excessive amount of daylight on this date, in some countries, especially in continental Europe, it is also observed as Naked Hiking Day. The logic for this activity being the longer the natural daylight lasts, the greater the length of time for hiking clothes free! Now that we have noted Europe’s special designation, the USA claims it deserves equality.

In 2023, in the USA, the Memorial Day holiday (a three-day weekend) falls on May 29. This is the day on which the USA honours all the war dead. This holiday is also considered – at least in the USA and Puerto Rico – as the unofficial start of the summer season.

Confused? I am, too! That’s the reason why here on ReNude Pride we follow the official commencement of the 2023 summer: June 21!

Sunscreen spray!

Justification:

For many persons, the summertime is synonymous as the legendary season of “fun-in-the-sun!” No matter which date one prefers for the arrival, there’s no denying the fact that warmer outdoor temperatures and longer periods of daylight are here. This means that the textile (clothed) folks are wearing less and that we bare practitioners are, as usual, nude. If we’re able to survive the winter naked, why expect anything differently from us during the summer?

It stands to reason that most (if not all) of us, bare or otherwise, are outside more than we were a month ago. While we are outdoors, we’re all exposing more of our skin to the sun’s rays. This baring of ourselves in all of this sunshine is a welcome change and relief from the barren dullness of winter and the colder temperatures.

In our eagerness to get out and frolic in the fresh air and warmer weather, many of us forget one of the basic rules of outside freedom and health: skin protection! We all need to cover up (protect) our skin before we uncover any part or all of our body. This protection entails the use of an appropriate sunscreen applied correctly, adequately (sufficient quantity) and, when necessary, reapplied diligently.

Using sunscreen allows most of us to make the most of whatever opportunities our summer plans may offer. The purpose of sunscreen is to protect ourselves from sunburn and other conditions of sun ray excess or worse.

Sunburn!

Sunburn:

Sunburn is caused by the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) radiation and not heat. It is important to remember that multiple layers of the skin can burn even on overcast or cloudy days, cold winter days and while under shade (shelter from direct sunlight). Sunburn damages or destroys the skin, which controls the amount of heat our body retains or releases, holds in fluids (hydration) and protects us from infection.

Reactions to sunburn range from mild irritation to serious pain. Sunburn may cause fevers and nausea (depending on the severity of the burn) and makes the dead skin peel away. Sunburn may lead to serious health complications later in life.

Sunscreen product!

Sunscreen information:

The information below is very general and is offered as a guide to use in selecting the type of sunscreen that’s best for personal protection. Keep in mind that every individual is just that, an individual: a unique person. What is applicable for one may or may not be the same for another. When in doubt, consult a health practitioner. It’s better to ask questions now than to suffer later! Please remember that everyone may or may not be allergic to certain ingredients contained within sunscreen.

What is sunscreen?

Sunscreen is a chemical that, to a certain degree, prevents UV (ultraviolet) radiation in sunrays from reaching the skin. While there is no product that totally eliminates UV radiation damage, many variations, when used properly, can and do protect the skin adequately.

What should I look for in a sunscreen?

Regardless of where the sun activity is taking place, backyard, ball-playing field, park or beach, etc., the product should contain two elements for effective protection. Always look for a “broad spectrum” sunscreen that contains chemicals that block or prevent both UV-A and UV-B radiation from penetrating the skin surface.

While no product is completely waterproof, select a “water resistant” type that is designed for long-lasting wear, especially if swimming or sweating. Choose a variation that is both easy to apply and feels good on the skin. There are numerous commercial brands available: creams, lotions, moisturizers, gels, sprays and solid stick types.

What is SPF?

The initials SPF refer to the phrase: sun protection factor. It is the measure of the effectiveness of the sunscreen in absorbing UV-B radiation. If someone sunburns after about 10 minutes of sun exposure, using a product of SPF15 extends the amount of time before sunburn occurs to 150 minutes or two-and-a-half hours. After this time, it should be reapplied to continue protection.

In terms of percentages, a product of SPF15 blocks 93% of the UV-B rays. One of SPF30 blocks 97% of radiation and one of SPF50 blocks 99%. The difference in protection may not justify the added expense of higher SPF sunscreens.

Sunscreen application!

What is the best sunscreen for me?

This depends on many factors, including age, skin type, racial identity, gender, activity, time of day, location (proximity to the equator) and the UV index. For most skin types, a sunscreen with a minimum SPF15 is recommended. Mem with fair or lighter skin tones (of all races) and low sun tolerance (burn easily) should use a SPF30. For minimal sun exposure, 90 minutes or less, a moisturizer cream may suffice (with correct SPF level).

For extended periods of sun exposure and higher activity engagement, use a longer-lasting product such as a cream, gel or lotion. Spray (aerosol or pump) are beneficial for hairy parts of the body, including the arms, the armpits, back, chest, legs and the pubic region. If a person is acne-prone, choose sunscreens that are oil-free or non-carnodegenic.

For persons with sensitive skin, the chemicals in some sunscreen variants may cause skin irritation. Use a product that contains only physical blockers (zinc oxide and/or titanium dioxide). A physical blocker does not penetrate the skin layers as do chemicals. Physical blockers stay only on the skin surface to provide protection.

What’s the best way to use sunscreen?

If you’ve used sunscreen before and received a sunburn, it was either a) applied incorrectly, b) the wrong SPF, c) a very cheap deviant, d) insufficient amount of sunscreen, or e) expired product. Before purchasing a sunscreen product, check the expiration date. Verify the SPF level with your particular needs. Make certain that the instructions for the use of the selected variety of sunscreen are with the product.

For sunscreen to be effective, it must be in sufficient quantity, applied correctly and thoroughly applied prior to sun exposure. Reapply sunscreen as instructed following the recommended timeline.

Remember the lips! Use a lip balm with a minimum SPF15!

How much?

One ounce (the equivalent of a full shot glass) per adult per application is the minimally recommended dosage for the average person. Apply liberally all over the body, including behind the ears, on the ears both edges and ear lobes. Everyone should remember to apply sunscreen in the armpits and behind the knees.

When to apply?

Sunscreen should be placed on the body – entirely – at least 30 minutes before going into the sun. Reapply approximately 15 minutes later. The extra initial application helps to ensure that all exposed body areas have been covered, including those that may have been missed the first time. Once in the sunlight, either directly or indirectly, repeat the application process according to the instructions or at least every couple of hours, especially if swimming, perspiring and/or towel drying.

Who should use sunscreen?

Everyone needs skin protection. All races and ethnicities are susceptible to sunburn. Men with darker skin complexions may have a higher tolerance for sun exposure but at some point, will begin to experience sunburn. Bear and bare in mind that skin damage and serious, sometimes fatal, complications later are a result of the failure to protect the skin.

Do darker-skinned people need sunscreen?

Within the Black-toned and Brown-toned skin communities, it’s a common misconception that their melanin-infused (darker skin tone) skin completely eliminates the necessity for sunscreen as protection. Yes, darker skin does protect from some UV rays, but all persons, regardless of their skin tone, need to wear sunscreen.

For a long time, all races believed that the darker complexions of persons of African and Middle Eastern ancestry/descent were fully protected from the harmful rays of the sun. Despite the fact that darker skin tones have greater genetic protection than fairer/lighter skin tones, everyone has a natural deficiency.

At minimum, human skin needs at least an SPF30 for full protection from UV rays. Black people, on average, have at least a deficit of about SPF17 because their only offers a protection level of SPF13.

What does the expiration date mean?

Sunscreen usually remains effective and stable for a period of three years. After the expiration date, the contents (ingredients) will begin to decompose and will not offer the intended protection. Always check the expiration date before application. Discard any product that is past the expiration date!

For the bare practitioner/naturist/nudist:

Apply sunscreen to the entire body. This includes the anus, armpits, penis and testicles (both front and back). Follow the reapplication guidelines every couple of hours. Body areas that may not receive direct sunlight absorb UV-A and UV-B radiation indirectly.

Manscaping (body hair removal), no matter the method used, creates sensitive areas on the skin surface. First apply a gentle body lotion, wait 15 minutes and then cover with sunscreen.

Sunglasses!

Eyes:

It is extremely important to wear sunglasses to prevent harmful UV radiation from damaging the eyes. Select a pair (and a spare) with UV filtering lenses.

Summary:

Summer is a naturist/nudist paradise for a variety of nudecentric outdoor activities: aquatics, athletics, barbecues and cookouts, events, festivals and socials. It is also a time for quiet solitude such as gardening, hiking, reading a book outside or a casual stroll along a nature trail. No matter how we choose to spend our leisure time, proper prevention against sunburn and other skin damage ensures all of us freedom from concerns over sun exposure. One less worry as we go about our business of having fun in the sun!

In adhering to the above practices, protocols and our own common sense, we’ll all be able to look back in the autumn and know a good time was had by all!
